Inter-generation and Different Nationalities PEEs
This source shows a young boy kicking a soccer ball and another adult beside him guiding him. This shows that the interaction and strong bonds between the adult and the kid. This means that both of them are working together despite the age gap. This also shows that people from the older generations are taking responsibility for the younger generations as the people from the younger generations will be taking over in the future.
This source shows a Malay woman guiding the Caucasian family of two. This shows the different races and nationalities interacting with each other. This means that tourists from other countries came to visit Singapore. This shows that people of other countries are interested in Singapore, and hence came to the National Museum of Singapore to explore and learn the history about Singapore. This shows that Singapore is a multi-racial country and is popular among the tourists too. Also, the tourists cooperates with the Singaporean workers implies that they trust us Singaporeans in what we do.
This source shows a young boy getting ready for his turn and an onlooker of a different nationality watching this scene. This shows the bonds between the younger generation and the older generation even though they are both of different races and nationalities. This means that Singapore is a racism-free country as no one would criticize another person of a different skin colour as them, in fact, everyone is equal and the all of the people get along together well too. It also implies that Singapore has successfully managed to attract tourists and immigrants to come here.
This source shows the people of different generations gathering together and interacting with each other on a special kids programme. This means that the children, adults and senior citizen were all gathering with their child/grandchildren and are involved in their discussion even though the programme that was conducted was meant for children. There are three generations together but they are still comfortable with each other. This means that they do not feel the age gap between them. This means that by having such programmes, it allows to create strong bonds between people of different generations and also enable them to interact with new friends comfortably.
Reflection
Group Reflection
There is only one word that can sum up this entire trail: Enriching. We cannot say that it is entirely enjoyable, because we have had our fair share of ups and downs, but neither can we say that it is unpleasant, because through this Orchard Road Trail, we have learnt so much more.
Let us point out our negatives first. Firstly, there was a time-management issue. We thought that there was so much time on our hands that we decided to take everything slow. However, we did not consider how much time the after-jobs would take, thus resulting in rushing towards the end of the deadline. We also did not plan our time well during the trail, thus causing us to not have sufficient time to complete the entire trail on a single day. Next, we were not clear on the requirements for the write-ups and PEEs, so we were very confused and disorganized when it came to that segment of the trail. We realized that we should always clarify before we start work, least we waste time redoing everything over and over again.
However, we benefited from the trail too. We were able to work together; we were all reliable and punctual for the group meetings. Different work load were allocated to each group member according to their strengths and everyone played a part in editing and reviewing each other’s work. The researchers had researched their parts accurately, the map-drawers had drawn out the map very precisely and gave correct directions, thus we rarely lost our way during the execution of the trail, and the photographers and “actors” in the group were professional and did their fair part in making the trail a success. We were efficient and responsible, and reminded each other to hand up work on time etcetera.
We had so much fun during the trail, and we all admit that we have become more bonded as a group and more mature in many ways. We learnt that trust is a key-factor to success, and though arguments were unavoidable, we had solved any problems together and made everyone content in the end.
Map
We chose Far East to be the start of Orchard Road as we believe that if we are at city, the places with more people are most likely Orchard Road. We defined this by observing the number of people, traffic lights and cars. Apparently, anywhere in Orchard till the MacDonald House (end of Orchard Road), not only was very crowded, there were often traffic jams on the streets and roads too. There are many shopping malls near Far East Plaza too but based on our research and observations, we chose Far East plaza as it quite is bustling.
Ngee Ann City is defined the middle of Orchard Road by us. It has the most number of vehicles, traffic jams and people. It has many shopping malls around it too, like Lucky Plaza, Tangs Plaza and ION Orchard. Ngee Ann City is indeed the most crowded place in Orchard Road.
On the other hand, we have come out with a decision and defined the MacDonald House as the end of Orchard Road. The MacDonald House functions as a banking hall so it is obvious that many people do go there. Plaza Singapura, the nearby shopping mall is also round the corner, so that will attract more people too. Based on our observations, even though there were many people, it was not as crowded as Ngee Ann City. Furthermore, the number of vehicles on the road has died down too. Hence, we chose the MacDonald House as the end of Orchard Road.
Mixed Landuse + High Density Usage PEEs
Mixed Land Use
This source shows the mixed land use in an Orchard road shopping mall. This is shown by the many different types of shops in the building such as cafes, sports shops and clothing shops. As many different shops are placed together, it reduces the travel time and costs between users and produces. This means that instead of having to go to one place with one purpose, the building has many shops to serve many purposes at the same time.
This source shows mixed land use in a shopping mall. This is shown by the section of the mall selling bags at the left while a restaurant is on the right. This is convenient for the users and helps them maximize their visit to the mall. By combining two different shops, it also reduces long-term maintenance costs of individual buildings. The land is used more efficiently and this also reduces traffic congestion and energy consumption for transportation.
High Density Land Use
This source shows the high density land use in Orchard Road. This is shown by the building with many levels that contains different shops and people. By building it tall, it is commercially viable rather than adding a few levels across many buildings. It reduces transport time and costs for producer to consumer. It reduces land take while allowing more economic activity to take place on a fixed piece of land. It also allows consumer to have access to larger markets of suppliers as well as more consumers for suppliers.
This source shows the high density land use in Orchard Road. This is shown by the many levels of the building that accommodates many different types of shops. Escalators are used to transport the customers to the higher level of the building. This means that the building is built tall instead of expanding the building sideways to accommodate more demand of shops. It is a solution to the rising demand and intensive competition for land. By doing so it maximizes existing land use and reduced the area of land used.
